Homework #4

  1. Write a short conditional argument to support the idea that "cold fusion theory" has (or doesn't have) merit as a scientific theory. See the index in Park for reference pages. Write a short paragraph supporting the second premise of the conditional argument. The second premise is the one where "A" is affirmed.
  2. Write a short conditional argument to support the idea that "power lines cause cancer" has (or doesn't have) merit as a scientific theory. See Chapter Seven in Park. Write a short paragraph supporting the second premise of the conditional argument. The second premise is the one where "A" is affirmed.

Some of the reference material for this homework is in Chapter Six of Park. Each argument should have a first premise something like: "If a theory satisfies (or doesn't satisfy) at least half of the criteria for a scientific theory, then the theory has (or doesn't have) merit as a scientific theory." Both the main argument and a separate short paragraph giving support for the second premise where you "affirm A" should be submitted for each problem. Since the second premise is affirming that the theory has (or doesn't have) merit as a scientific theory, the paragraph asked for as part of this homework can be thought of as the table in Homework #3 put into paragraph form.
